Chapter Fifteen

Hailey straightened her clothes and ran her fingers through her hair, knowing the effort was futile. Her father shot her a look full of condemnation even as he listened to A.J.’s excited chatter from outside the corral. Her father was wasted as a banker, really. He should have been a preacher. He would have been able to deduce people’s guilt with one scan and reduce them to confession in no time flat. But she refused to feel guilty, even as she felt the pressure to do so. She was a grown woman with a son, and she deserved a life too.

She took a deep breath and stepped out of the barn and into the sunshine, her eyes blinded by the bright light. A.J. saw her in the instant and came running, throwing his arms around her in a full-bodied embrace. She caught herself just before she fell to the ground, knees still a little weak from the orgasm Chase had triggered in her. “Did you know, Momma? Did you know that Chase was getting me a pony?”

She brushed his hair back from his forehead. “I think he got the pony for the ranch, baby. But he seems to be perfect for you to learn how to ride.”

A.J. grabbed her hand and dragged her to the corral, where Chase had brought out the pony for everyone to see while she had been collecting herself. Chase gestured for A.J. to come into the corral, and Hailey’s eyes widened in alarm.

“Chase, is he ready for that?”

He gave her an encouraging smile while stroking the pony. “We’ll be fine. Remember the rules, A.J.?”

A.J. nodded eagerly, almost bouncing in his excitement, but under Chase’s stern look, he slowly settled. “Walk slowly, talk quietly, and be careful.”

Once A.J. was calm, Chase nodded and gave him a big smile. “Great job! Okay, now, come on over here.”

Hailey watched as Chase slowly introduced A.J. to Wildfire. The pony was sedately standing still, patient and tolerant of the little boy who was almost jumping out of his shoes with excitement.

Meanwhile, Hailey leaned on the top railing of the fence and tried to ignore the censure radiating from her father. Her mother was standing by the gate a few feet away, completely absorbed in A.J. and the pony, snapping pictures with her phone. Finally, her father gripped her elbow and pulled her a few steps away, where they could still see everything but had a small measure of privacy. Chase glanced up, his expression darkening, but he remained focused with A.J.

“What’s going on out here? Do you really think this is a good idea, encouraging your son to follow in his father’s footsteps? Didn’t you learn your lesson with Adam?”

Her father’s words twisted like a knife in her gut, burning metal prodding at the old wounds, reopening the scars she had thought were long healed, but she refused to let him rain on A.J.’s happiness like he’d done to her for years. “Dad, it’s just a pony. All of his friends ride or are learning how to ride.
